In Quran 16:125, Allah instructs believers to extend invitations to the path of Islam with wisdom and compassion. This verse underscores the significance of imparting knowledge and engaging in respectful dialogue while conveying the message of Islam.
Islah (Reform/Improvement)
Surah Al-Imran (3:104) encourages believers to form a group dedicated to promoting goodness, encouraging virtuous deeds, and discouraging evil actions within society. This verse emphasizes the pivotal role individuals play in fostering positive change and underscores the importance of collective efforts in achieving success. By actively advocating for righteousness, believers contribute to societal improvement and spiritual elevation, thereby fulfilling their moral obligations and attaining divine favor.
Bringing Together Dawah and Islah: Making Things Better
Even though they’re not usually talked about together, Dawah (spreading Islam) and Islah (making things better) actually work hand in hand. Surah Al-Asr (The Declining Day)
Surah Al-Asr is a profound and concise chapter that resonates deeply with the essence of our mission. This chapter emphasizes the fleeting nature of time and the imperative of righteous action. It serves as a reminder to actively pursue positive deeds and avoid spiritual stagnation. The third verse outlines a clear path to success, emphasizing faith, virtuous actions, and the promotion of truth and patience. Surah Al-Asr encapsulates a powerful message that aligns with our goals of spreading Islam, promoting positive change, and fostering spiritual growth.
Verse 1: “By the declining day” (103:1)
This verse draws attention to the passing of time, specifically referring to the late afternoon or evening. The phrase “declining day” symbolizes the fleeting nature of time, serving as a reminder of life’s transience. It prompts believers to reflect on the value of time and the urgency of utilizing it wisely for righteous deeds.
Verse 2: “Indeed, humanity is in loss” (103:2)
Here, Allah declares that humanity, in its entirety, is at a loss. This loss refers to the failure of individuals to recognize the purpose of their existence and to live in accordance with divine guidance. It highlights the universal state of spiritual deprivation and emphasizes the need for self-reflection and correction.
Verse 3: “Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience” (103:3)
This verse presents a path to salvation amidst the overarching loss described in the previous verse. It outlines four essential components for achieving success:
Belief (Iman): Faith in Allah and His guidance through the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Righteous Deeds (Amal): Engaging in virtuous actions and adhering to the ethical principles prescribed by Islam.
Enjoining with Truth (Tawasaw bil-Haqq): Encouraging one another to uphold truthfulness, honesty, and integrity in all aspects of life.
Enjoining with Patience (Tawasaw bis-Sabr): Encouraging one another to exercise patience and perseverance in the face of trials and tribulations. This verse provides a roadmap for believers to transcend the state of loss by embodying faith, righteousness, truthfulness, and patience. It underscores the importance of collective efforts in supporting one another on the path of righteousness.
Surah Al-Asr serves as a concise yet profound reminder of life’s temporal nature and the imperative of righteous action. It urges believers to seize the opportunity provided by time to pursue faith, righteousness, and moral excellence. And command good and forbid evil, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, it is of the determination of resolve." (Quran 7:159)
